What I do

Posted by Jan On December - 2 - 2008

When it comes to web development, there is a host of things I can do ranging from simple website creation to complex database analysis, design and implementation. The list is long, but I can’t do everything because I am not a superman. In this document, I detail exactly what I do and how I do it.

Typically I offer two services, each comprising of other smaller services:

  • Web design
  • Web consulting

WEB DESIGN

Web design is understood here as planning, designing and implementing websites. It can be  an entire website, a section or sections of one, or both. For instance, installing a blog in a subdirectory or a forum in another. Database design is also considered as part of web design. Every task is different  from another and that’s why I need to give you a quote before I start working on your project. Below is a detailed list of what do once I agree to work on your website and the requirements  for every step.

  1. Agreement and signature
I am working autonomously but I am legally  responsible for what I do on your website. With that in mind, before I start doing anything,  we have to agree on the terms and conditions for your particular project. The subsequent points detail what I do and why.
  2. Thorough documentation of original state of the site.
When you trust me with your website, you expect me to carry out some changes at different levels. Before I start changing things around, I document as much of the original state of the site as possible. This includes taking screen shots of the appearance of the site before I work on it, the page source output by the browser before I work on the site, and the structure of the database (if it’s a database based website) before I start working on it. I do this in case of disputes and/or  misunderstandings.
  3. Documentation of every step of mine
This refers to the steps I take to carry out the changes on your website. As I progress, I document every step of the way so that my logic and reasoning can be tested with someone else’s if necessary. Again, this is another way of avoiding conflicts and misunderstandings. If for some reason I am stuck, I will email you to clarify things before proceeding with that step. It does not mean I have to put the project on a complete halt. For instance, if it is a bug in the database, I can keep working with  graphics while waiting for your response.
  4. Documentation of the complete project.
Once I am done doing all you asked me to, I will compile a final report detailing every single change I made in your website (database, scripts, graphics..) and submit it to you. It is not for approval, but rather for official reporting.

WEB CONSULTING

Web consulting  is not an action. It is a process that takes a bit more time than just putting some pages together.

It requires to understand the idea behind the website and a well planned strategy to achieve attainable goals set by the site owner. I offer bilingual Web consulting solutions both in French and English. This service is done on a per individual basis. Below is the detailed process.

  1. Overall Evaluation of your website

Many people start websites without thinking how far they want to go. This includes a clear vision (a set of attainable – reasonable – objectives) , an elaborate plan to reach those goal and a proven plan to show those goals are reachable.  Before I can help you with anything, I need to understand all these points very clearly. I do this during the  first evaluation  that takes anywhere between 4 hours – 16 hours (or an equivalent of two working days). This steps as I mentioned, takes no more than 48 hours or a total of 16 working hours (8 hrs/ day). I document your vision and plan of action and contrast them on the reality of the web today and the competition there’s.

  2. Discussion stage.

After the first step has been completed, we organize an information session during which I discuss with you the specifics on every point I find important during the evaluation. This step is lasts a minimum of 30 minutes ( which is considered 1 hr  of work).

  3. Conclusions and recommendations.

Once we’ve discussed everything, we draft a plan together to make the site more interesting so it brings about the expected results.

Consulting services are offered on an hourly basis with rates changing according to our Pricing informations.

About Me

About me I love mathematics first of all. I enjoy playing soccer and volleyball, but I love Web design. Web design brings out the artist in me, mathematics brings out the philosopher in me and sports simply maintain the level of adrenaline required to make everything possible. I honestly thank God I can do things I like, when I like!
