MyweddingBlog.org :: A new addition

Posted by Jan On April - 3 - 2010

Back in 2009 I wrote a blog entry on the future and networking. Basically all I was saying was that wordpress was evolving toward a more notwork like structure especially with the introduction of buddypress.

Recently, myweddingblog.org was another addition to our list of social networks designed with buddypress at Janvier Designs.cm. So, if you are planning a wedding or simply trying to have a blog, sign up for one at http://www.myweddinglblog.org !

Socialtract.com :: WordPress at its best

Posted by Jan On March - 5 - 2010

When you need a multiblog system where each blogger may need their own blog that looks completely different from any other, wordpress Multi users (WPMU) may come in handy. At SocialTract.com they chose that setup and when they asked me to help with the process I couldn’t think twice about it. First off, it required various themes to be designed, that can be customized to look different from blog to blog. So, while blog A may have a black ground Blog B may require a red one or purple. The easiest way to achieve this is by using wordpress custom fields or setting up options in the backend of the blogging software. I combined both!

The amazing fact about wordpress is that it allows you to set a number different themes  each of which can then  be customized individually to give a totally different  look. A simple example to illustrate that would be http://demo.socialtract.com VS http://jandemo.socialtract.com/ Notice they use the same theme  but look almost different  from every aspect ranging from  background color to navigation  buttons!

SwissiteInternational.com with WordPress

Posted by Jan On December - 25 - 2009

SwissiteInternational is live now with wordpress. The theme it uses was designed 100% from scratch here at Janvier Design and I have to admit this is probably the most advanced theme we’ve ever created for a client from scratch. The theme itself is not that complicated, it’s just its functionality. It is an advanced theme in that it uses almost every aspect of wordpress.

  1. Custom Fields.
Custom fields are just a cool way wordpress adds extra data to a page or post. Each custom field have a name and value. So, if you want to add say a custom logo on every post and you want distinct logos, you simply add a custom field called “post_logo” and in the value field you can add the  full URL to the image you would like to use.
  2. Page templates.
WordPress calls theme files in a determined order. You may choose to have two pages display different (different feel) by using a cool feature wordpress uses of defining page templates. I used 4 different theme pages on swissiteinternational theme!
  3. Speed.
The whole point to design from scratch was to avoid cramming unnecessary code in the theme. So, I designed with “speed in mind” mentality. For Chiara Bolognini who use the the, I am sure she wouldn’t probably had liked anything better!

The Red Drop foundation

Posted by Jan On December - 1 - 2009

When Nikki asked me to design a site for her but that she needed something unique, I switched to my thinking gears! Back in the days before starting to work with wordpress – which just won the best Open source CMS award 2009 - when I painfully  hand coded every single line,  I had worked with an interesting concept of using  CSS maps. The catch was, I had never tried this with wordpress and I wasn’t sure how it was gonna  turn out. Then I had my Eureka moment when I realized I could  simply use a custom menu function instead of the main wordpress wp_list_pages() one. What resulted was the  current main look of the Red  Drop Foundation website!

For subsquent pages, I used the regular wordpress page hierarchy! Sometimes it pays to think outside the box. The design proved so nice that I decided I am going to use it on the upcoming Janvier Designs WordPress Themes.

Timeformom-me.com :: A social network for mothers

Posted by Jan On October - 13 - 2009

Before jumping to conclusions, allow me to make it clear that I do not teach mothers anything. After all, my motherhood abilities are 100% challenged. However, I work with someone who teaches mothers stuff. For instance, how to practice better self care. Her name is Mia Redrick. She is the founder of Finding Definitions , a company based in Baltimore, MD – USA. She does a lot of things  but web design and develoment is certain one of those. That’s why she decided to let me take over just about a month or so ago.

The thing is, she has a network of moms she wants to bring together via http://timeformom-me.com to help them practice better self care. Do I understand everything there? You bet I don’t. However, I make sure they can do what they want with the website, and that the site looks as they want it to. That’s the job of a web designer anyhow.

It is now my second week managing the site on a part time basis, but the experience is very rewarding. With more than fifty blogs already, you can look and imagine what it will be within the next few months. I am excited and challenged to come up with new solutions to make the experience of the users even more rewarding!

KikoSoccer.com is another addition

Posted by Jan On July - 26 - 2009

I haven’t added much on the site in the recent weeks. I am consumed up in making the Internet a more attractive place. Take a look at http://www.kikosoccer.com for instance. I worked on it recently to make it look this way.

As you can tell (or not), my obsession with Studio Press themes is far from over. As a matter of fact I am thinking of launching a fully  featured service tailored at Studio Press themes. There are various reasons for that, but the main one is the ease with which customization is done.

site_screenshot It is a combination of the basic pages that come with the lifestyle_30 theme and a swarm of custom made pages to suit the needs of the website!

PraiseVoice.com network

Posted by Jan On June - 22 - 2009

WordPress did not become the best publishing platform in the world by chance. It is not a chance that big fish in the Online pond trust it. Company sites such as  CNN blogs , Ford autoshow, and many more use wordpress. It may be a mere coincidence, but hold on. ZDNET blog also use wordpress! Why then would a respected company like CNN base its performance on chance? This post is not about wordpress features,  and I would limit its scope to that end. I simply want to talk about praisevoice.com.

First of all, it’s also wordpress based. As an added spice, it is not just a regular blog. It is not a fully functioning network integrated with facebook (one can log into praisevoice.com with their facebook account), but it is wordpress based. Though I don’t want to go into details of the site either, I simply want to mention it was designed in the Janvier Design studios. Its traffic soared an amazing 3700%. I as  stunned! pv_alexa1The site is literally  on steroids give how high its traffic shot both in the number of visitors, average time on site, pageviews and pageview/user.

This was achieved by simply hooking the site to wordpress and its new amazingly easy to work with plugin buddypress. I am 100% certain that Buddypress is an amazing opening in the future of the web and its social side. In less than a month, I can account for “miracles” in terms of boosting a site. Now I can really about boosting a website traffic without investing a penny with Search engines or other marketing schemes. 100% raw, natural and focused traffic.

Ignatian Spirituality Dot Com !

Posted by Jan On May - 5 - 2009

When am used to working with wordpress so much that I tend not to think about any other CMS out there. Well, it’s my weakness and I am not alone in the basket. Visit CNN.com, reuters.com , Yahoo! , about.com , techcrunch.com and many more It sure could be a coincidence that we all are weirdos, with no sense of reason, but I don’t think so! WordPress is simply irresistible and so powerfully tailored to making  Publishing easy, practical and secure.

Ignatianspirituality.com became another addition to the wordpress family. When Denise contacted me to customize their thesis theme I wasn’t pretty sure where to start from given I had not worked with thesis before, but it’s a wordpress theme. How more complicated could it be? To my surprise, it  turned out to be a little more complicated than I thought. It’s entirely  on hooks. I won’t  go into details about the whole ordeal of editing php to generate CSS, but the most important part is that  it’s now live and running!!

PS: It has injected some more history as far as the Janvier – Sprtiality duo is concerned!

About Me

About me I love mathematics first of all. I enjoy playing soccer and volleyball, but I love Web design. Web design brings out the artist in me, mathematics brings out the philosopher in me and sports simply maintain the level of adrenaline required to make everything possible. I honestly thank God I can do things I like, when I like!
